Commonwealth Games: Hoe Yean qualifies for men's 400m freestyle final on debut
Khiew Hoe Yean put himself in medal contention on his Commonwealth Games debut after reaching the men's 400m freestyle final on Friday.
The 19-year-old, who holds the national record in the event with 3:48.72, finished fourth in his heat with a time of 3:50.03, which was enough to be among the top eight swimmers and qualify for the final, taking place later on the same day at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.

Northern Ireland's Daniel Wiffen led the swimming pack with 3:47.43, followed by Australia's Mack Horton (3:47.54) and Elijah Winnington (3:48.32).
Khiew is also scheduled to compete in 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke at Birmingham 2022.
Meanwhile, national compatriots Phee Jinq En reached the women's 50m breaststroke semi-finals and Bryan Leong was knocked out of the men's 50m butterfly event in the preliminary heat.
