Malaysian para sprinter Afiq Ali Hanafiah could not control his emotions after finishing last in the men's 100m T11/T12 (visual impairment) final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Gold Coast 2018 bronze medallist set a new national record of 11.10s but it was not enough to beat South Africa's Ndodomzi Ntutu (10.83s), England's Zachary Alexander Shaw (10.90s) and Namibia's Ananias Shikongo (10.95s).

At the end of the race, he lamented the lack of coaching available for him in Birmingham as his regular coach, Ahmad Rafee Ariffin, was on duty at the ASEAN Para Games in Indonesia, and former coach R. Jeganathan's contract was not renewed.

"I did not have a specific coach who could train me, but I managed to have Coach Bala [able-bodied athletics coach M. Balamurugan] to help me.

"Before I came here, he could not help too much [due to his main coaching commitment] and he could only help me with my training programme.

"I really wanted to do well but I couldn't," he told Astro Arena reporter Fina Nasrom.
