Buttler promises to 'double down' on attacking style in ODI against India
Jos Buttler has promised to double down on England's attacking approach ahead of their opening ODI game against India on Thursday.
England are looking to respond from their 4-1 defeat to India in their five-match T20 series as preparations for the Champions Trophy later this month begin.
It was confirmed on Wednesday that Joe Root would make his return to ODI action after 15 months away from the format, with his experience crucial for the upcoming games.
England have lost four of their last five ODIs against India (W1), including losing each of the last two on the bounce.
The last time they went on a longer losing run against India in the format was a stretch of four games between June 2013 and September 2014.
In addition, England have won only one of their last four men's ODIs played away from home (L3) – a five-wicket win against West Indies (2 November 2024).
However, they have won each of their last two matches in the format played in India, having lost five back-to-back matches in the country prior.
England's batting has been unconvincing against India's spinners, but there will be no diverting from the script of trying to put pressure on the opposition and bowlers always looking to take wickets.
"[It will be a] continuation of committing to the style of cricket we want to play, really doubling down on that in the 50-over format," said Buttler.
"Obviously, the Champions Trophy is just around the corner so it's great to play against a top side, three ODIs before that tournament.
"We want to play in exactly the same way. We want to find ways to put pressure on the opposition with the bat. You've got to take wickets, it's crucial.
"You see how if you let guys bat for a period of time they can go on to hurt you, so we will be desperate to try and find ways of taking wickets. It's always about execution, really.
"Whatever plan you come with, you've got to try and execute it well, and we believe that's the best way for us to win cricket games and get the best out of the players in our dressing room. So we'll double down on that.
"I think we played well in phases in the T20s, never quite long enough to run with it and run away games and end up getting the results, but it's really important that we stay on track and stay on course with the way we want to play and try and execute that to the best of our ability in these games."
Among other changes in the England squad, Jacob Bethell has been preferred to Jamie Overton at number seven, while Jamie Smith drops out with a calf injury.
Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood and Jofra Archer form the three-man pace attack, with the latter close to reaching another milestone in his career.
Archer (47 wickets) is three away from registering 50 wickets in ODIs. He has, however, failed to log a three-wicket haul in each of his last six innings in the format.
He has also gone wicketless in three games. This will only be his second game in the format against India after 30 June 2019, a game where Archer failed to pick up a wicket.
On the selection of the team for the first ODI, Buttler added: "The structure of the way we want to set the team up and the style of play we want to go with is quite clear and then [it's about] fitting the guys into that.
