This year's State of Origin series will be Billy Slater's last after the veteran Queensland great announced his intention to retire from representative duty.

Slater – who made his debut in 2004 – will retire from Maroons honours after the three-game Origin series against New South Wales, which gets underway in Melbourne on June 6, as well as Australia duty.

The 34-year-old Melbourne Storm full-back is set to make his 30th Queensland appearance against the Blues at the MCG, having played a key role in the Maroons' Origin dominance, yielding 11 series victories in the past 12 years.

"I want to say a huge 'Thank you' to the fans for fuelling us with the passion," Slater said on Tuesday.

"My family - obviously a lot of support and unconditional support has been there with my family, my wife Nicole and my two kids. My dad instilled that rugby league passion in me when I was a boy.

"I would like to thank the Queensland public, the Innisfail people, they've always made me feel pretty special playing in the Maroons jersey.

"I think about the traits we have here in the Maroons team - be humble, never give up and look after your mates when they're doing it tough. They're just traits of Queenslanders."

It is a new era for Queensland under head coach Kevin Walters following the retirements of iconic trio Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk.

The Maroons are seeking their fourth successive Origin series triumph against the Blues.
