Malaysian rower Khairuddin Azwi had a poor qualifying showing in the men's single sculls event at the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday as he came last.

In the second heat of the day, the 22-year-old (9:17.55) finished almost 90 seconds behind first-place Zhang Liang (7:51.99) of China, who qualified for the final alongside Heat One winner Ryuta Arakawa (7:56.08), following a technical mistake at the start of the race.

"What happened was that I was caught by surprise because a quick start was used, in which country names are not called out.

"Another reason was the strong wind, so it required time to get back into position," Khairuddin told Astro Arena.

Despite the poor performance, he will have a second chance to qualify for the final in Tuesday's repechage stage, in which only the two best rowers will go through.

"I will do my best in the repechage to reach the final," he added.
