Malaysian para-cyclists Khairul Hazwan Wahab and Khairulnizam Ali might not recover in time for the 2017 ASEAN Para Games, Khairy Jamaluddin commented.
The duo as well as coach Johari Nayan, tandem pilots Nor Rizuan Zainal and Nur Syafiq Suhaimy were hit by a four-wheel drive near the Bandar Tasik Puteri intersection along the Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor (LATAR) Expressway yesterday.
The Malaysian Youth and Sports minister visited the team at the Sungai Buloh Hospital, where they are now being treated under the supervision of Dr Azril Syazwan Ali, chief medical officer of the Malaysian Para Games contingent.
Despite them being tipped to win gold in the road time trial event at the upcoming Games, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from September 17 to 23, Khairy insisted the cyclists' well-being comes first.
"Hazwan and Nizam have suffered concussions, while Nur Syafiq broke his right leg and will need to undergo surgery. Rizuan has a spinal injury," he told reporters.
"If the para-cyclists are not able to recover in time from concussions, we have to miss out on their event."
Meanwhile, it is understood that the hit-and-run driver surrendered to police around 5pm yesterday.
