The USA's women's football team were stunned by Canada in the semi-finals to compound a disappointing tournament that also saw them well beaten by Sweden in the group stage.

Megan Rapinoe and her team-mates can salvage something from the Olympics in the bronze medal match against Australia.

The men's basketball team also have Australia for company in their semi-final, while the US baseball team are similarly still in contention for gold as they take on Korea Republic in the final four.

The USA men's basketball team lost 91-83 to Australia in a pre-tournament exhibition game and have the chance to set the record straight in Thursday's semi-finals.

The Boomers demolished Argentina 97-59 in their quarter-final despite being behind after the first quarter.

Gregg Popovich's team showed signs of hitting their stride in a 95-81 win over Spain, where Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant racked up 29 points.

France will take on Slovenia in the other semi-final after Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic excelled with 20 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists in his country's 94-70 win over Germany.


Team USA defeated the Dominican Republic on Tuesday to book their semi-final showdown with Korea, with Boston Red Sox first base Triston Casas' two-run homer providing the foundation for a 3-1 triumph.

Veteran pitcher Scott Kazmir impressed with five shutout innings, striking out five of the 18 batters he faced – further cause for optimism ahead of facing a team they beat during the group stages

The competition format means Korea are into the semi-final meeting by virtue of losing to Japan, who await the winner of their match with the US. The hosts also boast a second-round 7-6 win over the United States after an extra innings.

The Dominican Republic are still in contention for a medal and will face the loser of the USA versus Korea for the bronze.


Australia and the United States drew 0-0 during the group stage, each coming off second best to Sweden who also saw off the Matildas 1-0 in the semi-finals.

Lyon defender Ellie Carpenter will miss the bronze medal match in Kashima after a red card for a professional foul during the closing stages of that match, while US goalkeeper Alysssa Naeher is out with the knee injury that forced her substitution against Canada.

Veteran midfielder Carli Lloyd has the most Olympic appearances in USA history with 21 outings. She also scored the winning goal in the 2008 and 2012 finals, so her expertise could prove valuable with another medal on the line.


One Australian team still gunning for top spot on the rostrum is the men's hockey side, who beat Germany 3-1 to reach their first final for 17 years.

Their opponents Belgium were in dominant form in the semi-finals, dispatching India 5-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Tokyo 2020 top scorer Alexander Hendrickx.

The Germany v India bronze medal match will precede the final at Oi Hockey Stadium.
