'Nothing to regret' for Man City and Guardiola after FA Cup final defeat

Pep Guardiola insisted that he had "nothing to regret" after Manchester City's FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace.

City were beaten 1-0 in Saturday's showpiece, with Eberechi Eze's 16th-minute strike sealing a first major trophy for the Eagles at Wembley Stadium.

But the Citizens had their chances in the contest, with Omar Marmoush seeing a first-half penalty saved by Dean Henderson, who was in inspired form for Palace.

Henderson also denied efforts from Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol and substitute Claudio Echeverri, with City unable to find a way through despite their dominance.

Indeed, Guardiola's team had 76.7% possession in this match, the most on Opta's records (from 2014) in an FA Cup final.

Ruben Dias completed more passes himself (129) than Palace did as an entire team (126). Despite this, the Citizens' 23 shots were the most on record (from 2014) by a side that failed to score in an FA Cup final.

But it was yet another defeat for City, who have now lost 16 games in all competitions this season – their most in a single campaign since 2008-09 (23).

Following the full-time whistle, Palace hero Henderson clashed with Guardiola over the Palace goalkeeper's delaying of restarts throughout the entirety of the encounter.

Guardiola said his City side never try to waste time because he wants to "play the game like people deserve to watch".

"He defended his position, we defended our position. It's time-wasting," Guardiola said.

"I understand in the last minutes, but since one or two minutes? He's British, in English football, you have to play.

"I'm sorry. Everyone can do whatever they want. We have to score goals. We didn't lose because Henderson was time-wasting. In the last minutes, I understand [time-wasting]."

City have now lost the FA Cup final two years in a row (also to Manchester United in 2024). It is the seventh time they have finished as runners-up in the competition, with only Manchester United (nine), Chelsea and Everton (both eight) doing so more.

But Guardiola was happy with how his side performed compared to their display against their city rivals a year ago.

"Congratulations to Palace. We did everything. Nothing to regret. In the last two games, we faced teams who are so, so deep," Guardiola said.

"We created a lot. If you cannot score goals, you cannot win.

"We are sad because we didn't win, but we played much better, better than against United last season. We did everything. We created a lot of chances.

"In the last two games, we shot 50 times. Football is sometimes like this. We did everything, and they defended well. We created chances.

"We controlled the transitions really good. Unfortunately, we could not win, and we congratulate Crystal Palace."
