Newcastle United 1-2 Brighton (aet): Gordon sees red in FA Cup defeat

Anthony Gordon was sent off as Newcastle United suffered a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round, and he will now be suspended for the EFL Cup final.

Gordon was sent off for aiming a mindless push at Jan Paul van Hecke's head with seven minutes of the 90 remaining, after Yankuba Minteh had cancelled out Alexander Isak's early penalty.

A second yellow card for Tariq Lamptey ensured it was 10 versus 10 for the duration of extra time, but Brighton reached the quarter-finals for the second time in three years as Danny Welbeck lobbed Martin Dubravka for a 114th-minute winner.

Isak had already prodded over from close range before he was gifted a spot-kick by former Newcastle winger Minteh in the 22nd minute.

Minteh's clumsy lunge on Tino Livramento near the corner of the box gave Anthony Taylor no choice but to award a penalty, and Isak made no mistake as he blasted past Bart Verbruggen.

The Swede saw a thunderous near-post finish chalked off for offside shortly afterwards, then Minteh atoned for his error on the stroke of half-time. The winger, who Newcastle sold to Brighton last year, combined brilliantly with Joao Pedro, before his left-footed shot found the net via a deflection off Kieran Trippier.

After both teams traded chances in the second half, Brighton seemed to be in the ascendency following a remarkable loss of composure from Gordon, who shoved Van Hecke with both hands with the play dead following an offside call against Isak.

But two minutes into stoppage time, Lamptey's lunge on Jacob Murphy earned him a second yellow card, and only a marginal offside call denied Newcastle a dramatic winner as Fabian Schar's thumping finish was disallowed using the semi-automated offside technology.

Newcastle – who also saw Isak limp off late on – were second-best for much of the additional half-hour, and a moment of class from Welbeck decided it as he took in Solly March's pass and clipped his finish home.

Data Debrief: Red mist descends

Sunday's eventful tie at St James' was the first FA Cup meeting between two Premier League teams to feature a red card for both teams since March 2016.

On that occasion, Gareth Barry and Diego Costa were sent off in Everton's 2-0 quarter-final win over Chelsea.

Adding to Newcastle's woes, Gordon is now set for a three-match ban for violent conduct, meaning he must sit out the EFL Cup final against Liverpool on March 16, as well as Premier League matches against West Ham and Brentford.

Gordon is the first Newcastle player to receive a red card in the FA Cup since Shola Ameobi in the 2012-13 third round, also against Brighton.

Isak, who now has 17 goals in his last 18 matches across all competitions, also appeared to be in discomfort as he left the field late on, leaving Eddie Howe with an anxious wait on his condition.
