Adrian Luna's first-half brace helped Melbourne City to a 4-0 rout of lowly Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Erick Mombaerts' men led from the the third minute as they warmed up for next weekend's derby by closing back to within five points of leaders Sydney FC.

Luna prodded City into an early lead when Craig Noone's pass squirmed between two Newcastle defenders.

He had a second before the half-hour mark, the Uruguayan nodding in Joshua Brillante's cross after the Jets failed to clear their lines.

Javier Cabrera hammered a third past Glen Moss in the 47th minute and set up Jamie Maclaren for a straightforward finish 12 minutes later.

Maclaren's goal, his 10th in six appearances, saw the Socceroos striker become the quickest player to reach double figures in an A-League season.
