Matthysse wants to redeem Argentina’s pride in Pacquiao fight
Argentinian boxer Lucas Matthysse is determined to beat Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao at the 'Fight of Champions' to ease his country's disappointment at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion wanted to redeem Argentina’s 4-3 defeat to France in the Round of 16.
"We all know that Argentina were unlucky at the World Cup, although they had been playing very well.
"Likewise, this fight is no different and equally important to our people. I will try my best to retain the title," he told reporters after a warm-up and training session in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.
Matthysse would square off against Pacquiao in a much-anticipated battle at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, this Sunday.
The 35-year-old Argentinian has won 39 bouts (36 knock-outs), while his challenger is the only eight-division world champion with 59 victories (38 knock-outs).
Matthysee, nicknamed 'The Machine' for his formidable punching power, won the title in January after beating Thai boxer Tewa Kiram.
The upcoming bout is considered by many to be the biggest boxing event to be held in Kuala Lumpur after the Muhammad Ali-Joe Bugner fight in 1975.
