Adam Lallana has claimed no player is worthy of more success than Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

After helping Liverpool end their 30-year wait for a top-flight title, Henderson was named the Football Writers' Association's (FWA) Footballer of the Year on Friday.

The 30-year-old – who has scored four goals in the league this season – has been an influential force in Jurgen Klopp's midfield.

Henderson saw off competition from club-mates Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, as well as Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne for the FWA award, but Lallana, whose six-year stay at Liverpool will come to an end after Sunday's final match of the campaign, believes the former Sunderland man is fully deserving of the plaudits.

"I've been alongside him in his dark moments, a couple of injuries he's had, and him being alongside me in my dark moments – injuries, it's not just defeats," an emotional Lallana, who used a specific example to demonstrate Henderson's commitment and drive, told Liverpool's official website.

"There was one morning, because we used to drive in a lot, me and Jordan. There was one defeat – Liverpool lost to Sevilla, or it was 3-3 but felt like a defeat.

"He must've wanted a conversation because he said he'd pick me up. Just hearing him say, as captain, that it can't happen, that he was responsible for that.

"To hear how honest he was, but thinking, 'Are you crazy to be taking that responsibility?' It was a team responsibility, but that epitomises his selflessness and how much responsibility he takes for this football club.

"In the bad moments, that's not in the good moments. That's why he deserves this more than anyone else.

"He deserves to be the captain of Liverpool, holding four trophies in one season, and no one can take that away from him. Being his team-mate, not just his friend, there's nothing that makes me happier really."

Lallana joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2014, and has gone on to make 178 appearances for the Reds, scoring 22 goals.

"There's definitely a sadness obviously," Lallana said of leaving the club.

"I was back in Bournemouth at the weekend and I was driving back up, it's a long journey and you do a lot of thinking. I just want to enjoy this week as much as possible.

"There are parts of me that are excited about my next challenge which I'm close to knowing what's happening so there's a mixture of emotions really at the moment.

"But what I keep bringing it back to is just making sure I enjoy every last day of my last week really because there's a lot happening.

"To be leaving having won four trophies is somewhat remarkable really, I still can't believe it. So, I think it's kind of a fitting time to leave and end my chapter here."
