Jurgen Klopp revealed his regret over supporting the implementation of VAR in football after the technology played a major role in Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Midtjylland on Wednesday.

Both teams saw a goal chalked off as a result of interventions from the video assistant referee, while a review also led to the Reds conceding a second-half penalty.

Although Klopp had no qualms with the actual decisions themselves, he was not happy with the amount of time taken by the team of officials, which prompted eight minutes of added time.

That gripe led the Liverpool manager to suggest that, on reflection, he does not believe VAR to represent the success he had hoped for.

He said: "It took just too long. I think now in the end - I didn't see it back obviously - all the decisions were right even though they were so difficult to make.

"They all took like three, four minutes, [it was] cold for the boys in shorts. It's really hard - I can hear already people saying, 'Oh my God, why is he talking about that?' - but it took really long and it was really cold. So that doesn't help.

"In the end, I used to be one of the people who said, 'Yes, VAR is a good idea' but I'm really not sure if I would say that again."

Despite making eight changes from Sunday's win over Wolves, Klopp still went surprisingly strong with his selection in starting the likes of Fabinho and Mohamed Salah.

Asked to explain if using the latter for 90 minutes represented "a risk", he replied: "If you want to play football, you saw in the second half you can make changes but you need a few key positions.

"It could have been one of the other three playing in that position but you have kind of patterns; in the last line that was the reason Fabinho played 45 minutes.

"In midfield, usually it would have been Naby [Keita] but he didn't play that often, he just needs to get minutes now again.

"That was the decision for Mo and, how the game developed, how the game looked, Mo looked fine, that's why we didn't take him off.

"The players who don't play that much, it's just really difficult to get through a full 90 minutes after a pretty long time without 90 minutes.

"Mo, I was in contact with him, he had no issues, so that was the reason we left him on the pitch when he started."
