Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) won the Malaysia Cup for the first time following a 2-0 win over holders Kedah in the final on Saturday.

It was the first time a Johor side lifted the prestigious trophy since 1991 when Johor FA (now JDT II) beat Selangor 3-1.

The Southern Tigers also became the second club side to emerge victorious since the now-defunct MPPJ won it in 2003.

The four-time Malaysian Super League champions were off to a good start as Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak headed the ball into the back of the net from a Safiq Rahim corner in the second minute.

A stunned Kedah side, who were in their third straight Malaysia Cup final, struggled to recompose themselves and were lucky not to give away more goals.

Natxo Insa pulled his shot wide after a poor clearance by Khairul Helmi Johari in the 20th minute, while Gabriel Guerra's effort was incredibly denied by goalkeeper Ifwat Akmal Che Kassim with his head a minute later.

After almost 30 minutes of game time, Kedah finally got their first sniff of a goal-scoring opportunity when Liridon Krasniqi lifted the ball over the JDT backline for Ken Ilso Larsen to chase, but goalkeeper Izham Tarmizi was quick to rush out to pressure the Danish forward into mishitting his effort.

It proved to be the holders' only meaningful attack in the first half as JDT went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Kedah came out with more purpose in the second half, which nearly resulted in a goal through Baddrol Bakhtiar, who headed Syazwan Zainon's cross against the bar in the 55th minute.

Just when it seemed an equaliser was on the horizon, man-of-the-match Gonzalo Cabrera doubled the lead on the hour mark.

Ahmad Hazwan Bakri, who was entrusted to lead the JDT attack ahead of Mohammed Ghaddar, crossed the ball into the box for the Argentine to slide the ball in.

Kedah threw everything forward throughout the closing stages, but barring another attempt from Baddrol hitting the woodwork again, JDT were resilient and held on for the win to complete a league and cup double this season.
