Indonesian football marred by fan death in brawl

Indonesian football made the headlines again after the death of a football supporter in a fight.

A Persija Jakarta fan died after being beaten up by a group of Persib Bandung supporters on Sunday.

In the 1pm incident, Haringga Sirilla, 23, was assaulted by fans of the opposing team outside the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium in Bandung.

Bandung police chief M. Yoris Maulana said 10 suspects were held over the incident.

Squabbles at football matches which resulted in fatalities are nothing new in Indonesia as it was reported that seven supporters from the two clubs had been killed in assaults since 2012.

The aggressive and provocative nature of Indonesian sports fans has also been a cause of concern for foreign teams playing in the country.

In an AFF Cup Under-19 football match in July, Malaysia players were struck by plastic bottles and stones hurled by Indonesian fans.
