Eddie Howe conceded that Alexander Isak's future is not fully in his hands as Newcastle United battle to keep their star striker.

Isak has not travelled with the rest of Newcastle's squad for their pre-season tour of Asia.

The forward, who plundered 23 Premier League goals last season, has reportedly asked to leave the club.

Liverpool are interested in signing Isak, while Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal have also been linked.

But while Howe reminded the press that Isak remains under contract at Newcastle, who would likely demand a British-record transfer fee for the 25-year-old, the Magpies boss acknowledged that he is not in control of the situation.

Speaking at a press conference in Seoul, Howe said: "He is still our player. He's contracted to us.

"We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us.

"My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control.

"We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays, and we see him playing again next [season]."

Newcastle have been credited with an interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko as a potential replacement for Isak.

Meanwhile, they have had several bids knocked back by Brentford for Yoane Wissa, with the Bees reportedly demanding £50m for the 28-year-old.

It has been a frustrating transfer window for Newcastle so far, with the Magpies having missed out on key targets Hugo Ekitike, who has joined Liverpool, and James Trafford, who seems set to head to Manchester City.

"It is an important time for us. There's lots to take in," added Howe.

"We have to bring the right type of player in. We should in no way act out of character and should work how we always have in the window. That is in a strategic way.

"If the right player isn't available to us for the right price, then we can't do the deals. Everything has to fall in line.

"We are looking to add depth and quality to the areas that we have identified. Fingers crossed we can get deals done."

Newcastle are also said to hold an interest in Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson, while reports on Monday suggested a deal to bring in goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton was close.
