Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner will serve a 50-day prison sentence for assaulting a taxi driver, the State Prosecutor of Copenhagen confirmed.

The 30-year-old, who is now contracted to Rosenborg, was involved in an altercation in the Danish capital in September and, despite claiming he acted in self-defence, was handed a jail term.

Bendtner and his girlfriend reportedly left the taxi without paying the fare - which amounted to £5 - due to the driver's directions.

The taxi driver threw an object at the couple before Bendtner broke his jaw, with the driver subsequently fined and released.

Bendtner admitted to punching the driver, though he claimed he acted merely in self-defence.

"I responded in self-defence," the footballer said in court. "I was surprised by it, but I hit him in the head with my hand.

"I thought the driver would hurt me. As we confronted each other, we lifted our arms at the same time, and I hit him first."

He was expected to appeal but the State Prosecutor of Copenhagen confirmed via social media the case has been closed and the sentence originally passed will be served.

"The verdict is therefore final," a brief statement from the State Prosecutor said.

Bendtner, who will also pay a 1,500 kroner (£179) fine, previously made a public apology to the club, his fans and team-mates over the incident.

"To the club, I'm sorry with all my heart that we are standing here," he said.

"Rosenborg has been more than a good club to me. It felt like a new home and a new family, as I needed more than ever a change of air and a new start."

The 30-year-old spent nine years with Arsenal, though he failed to win a trophy, scoring 47 goals in 171 appearances.

He also spent time on loan with Birmingham City, Sunderland and Juventus, before moving permanently to Wolfsburg in 2014.

Spells at Nottingham Forest and, most recently, Rosenborg have followed, and the Dane is still under contract with the latter club.

He has played 10 times for the club this season, scoring three goals and providing four assists.

He has also won 81 caps for Denmark, scoring 30 times, leaving him seventh in the list of all-time top scorers for his country, ahead of even Brian Laudrup.
