Syahmi Safari's wonder goal at the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup will be submitted for the 2019 FIFA Puskas Award, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced on Wednesday.

The goal, which was scored against Thailand at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok last December, helped the Harimau Malaya reach the final, where they eventually lost to Vietnam.

"Although we are aware that the list of top 10 goals for the 2019 FIFA Puskas Award is selected and compiled by FIFA and their relevant committee, the FAM feel that a letter of recommendation still needs to be sent to FIFA as the FAM's show of support and to ensure the goal receives FIFA's attention.

"Based on the uniqueness of the goal involving seven players, starting from goalkeeper Farizal Marlias and ending with a fantastic strike by Syahmi, the FAM hope that it can be shortlisted among the 10 nominees for the 2019 FIFA Puskas Award," said FAM secretary-general Stuart Ramalingam.

If successful, the 21-year-old Selangor player will become the second Malaysian to be nominated for the honour.

Former Penang star Faiz Subri was nominated in the 2016 edition and went on to join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and James Rodriguez in collecting the award.
