Everton 1-1 Tottenham: Andre Gomes suffers serious injury before Tosun scores late leveller

Despite the absence of Harry Kane through illness, Tottenham appeared set to register their first away win in the Premier League since January thanks to Dele Alli's second-half strike.

However, Mauricio Pochettino's side were unable to hold onto their lead after Son Heung-min was dismissed for a tackle on Gomes that led to the midfielder suffering a severe-looking leg injury.

The South Korea international was visibly shaken following his involvement in the incident, as too was Spurs team-mate Serge Aurier, who Gomes collided with after the initial challenge.

A lengthy stoppage for treatment – following on from two VAR checks for penalty appeals – resulted in 12 additional minutes at Goodison Park, during which Tosun converted Lucas Digne's cross to secure a point.

Substitute Tosun's equaliser ensured Spurs' run without an away triumph in the league stretched to 12 games, while also bailing out team-mate Alex Iwobi after his sloppy pass had inadvertently set up the opening goal.

The former Arsenal forward watched on after losing possession inside his own half as Alli cut back inside onto his right foot before shooting low beyond Jordan Pickford.

Son had slipped the ball through Yerry Mina's legs to provide the assist yet his involvement in the game lasted only a further 16 minutes, referee Martin Atkinson deciding a red card was suitable punishment for the forward's attempt to stop Gomes' progress near the touchline.

Everton struggled to make the most of their numerical advantage until Tosun’s intervention, though the celebrations at rescuing something from the game soon turned to thoughts of Gomes' health at the final whistle.

A lacklustre first half – and that is being kind to both sets of players – highlighted the struggles of both teams, with the game 18 minutes old by the time either managed a shot.

Marco Silva's side have found goals tough to come by in the league – Tosun grabbed just their 11th of the campaign – but they produced a spirited response following Gomes' departure to avoid defeat.

While their away day problems continue – the club record is 14 games without a road victory, set during George Graham's reign – Alli is at least looking sharp once again.

The midfielder has now scored twice in his last three league outings, as many as he managed in his previous 15.

Video technology continues to be more of a hinderance than a help in the Premier League.

Tottenham appeared to have a seriously strong case for a penalty when Son collided with Mina early in the second half, while Alli escaped when a corner appeared to strike his raised arm.

- Everton have earned just four points from their last seven league matches (W1 D1 L5) – they had accrued 12 points from their previous seven games before this run (W3 D3 L1).

- Tosun's goal for Everton after 96 minutes and 57 seconds is the latest scored in a Premier League game since Alexis Sanchez found the net for Arsenal against Burnley in January 2017 (97 minutes and 14 seconds).

- Tottenham have now gone 82 consecutive Premier League games without a 0-0 draw – the only two sides to go on longer runs are Ipswich Town (87 – Aug 1994-May 2001) and Manchester United (114 – May 1999-May 2002).

- Jordan Pickford became only the 22nd player in Premier League history to appear in 100 consecutive matches (13 for Sunderland, 87 for Everton), and the first since Darren Fletcher (112 between February 2015 and December 2017).

- Spurs boss Pochettino is unbeaten in his last 12 matches against Everton (W7 D5) since losing while in charge of Southampton in December 2013.

Tottenham have a midweek date with Red Star in Belgrade before hosting Sheffield United.
