Borussia Dortmund have sacked head coach Nuri Sahin following their Champions League defeat to Bologna, the Bundesliga outfit announced on Wednesday.

Serhou Guirassy's early penalty was cancelled out by quickfire goals from Thijs Dallinga and Samuel Iling-Junior, leaving Dortmund 13th in the standings.

Dortmund's defeat meant they have lost back-to-back Champions League matches in the same season for the first time since November 2021 (run of three).

Meanwhile, the German side have lost multiple games after scoring the opening goal for the first time in a single edition of the European competition.

Tuesday's loss also marked a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions, something that has only happened to BVB between March and April 2000 (six in a row) within the last 30 years, forcing the club to take action.

Dortmund have also struggled domestically. They are 10th in the Bundesliga and seven points adrift of the top four, while they are 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich after just 18 games of the season.

They were also beaten in the second round of the DFB-Pokal by Wolfsburg back in October.

Sahin was appointed as the club's head coach in June last year, taking over from Edin Terzic, whose final game in charge came in the Champions League final, a game they lost 2-0 against Real Madrid at Wembley.

The 36-year-old oversaw 27 games in all competitions, winning 12 matches (drawn four, lost 11). He ended his time at the club he made 227 appearances for as a player with a win percentage of just 44.44%.

Of Dortmund managers to have taken charge of more than 20 games in the past 10 years, only Peter Bosz (1.25) averaged fewer points per game than Sahin (1.48).

"Borussia Dortmund has released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments," said the club in a statement.

Dortmund are next in action this Saturday when they take on Werder Bremen at the Westfalenstadion, a side that is a point and a place above them in the Bundesliga.
