Chelsea's treble-winners will 'be a part of history', says Bompastor

Sonia Bompastor believed that Chelsea's FA Cup victory over Manchester United would see her team become "a part of history" after clinching a domestic treble on Sunday.

Bompastor watched on as Sandy Baltimore scored either side of Catarina Macario's 84th-minute strike to seal a 3-0 win over the Red Devils at Wembley Stadium.

Indeed, Chelsea became the first Women's Super League team to complete a domestic treble on two separate occasions, having also done so in the 2020-21 campaign.

It rounded off a dream first season for Bompastor, who replaced Emma Hayes in May last year.

The 44-year-old guided the Blues to the WSL title, going unbeaten across the league season, as well as lifting the League Cup against Manchester City back in March.

"The players really deserve [to celebrate]. To achieve a treble in England, it's difficult to find the right words to describe that," Bompastor said of her team's achievement.

"It means a lot. I always say I want to make sure in every club I am manager that we have good values, the right values, and I want my players to really enjoy it.

"We worked hard all through the season. It was not easy and to achieve that will be part of history."

Bompastor also became the first non-British manager to win the FA Cup since Spaniard Pedro Martinez Losa, who lifted the trophy with Arsenal back in 2016.

She has now won all five of her domestic finals as a manager (two with Chelsea, three with Lyon).

And the Blues were deserving of their victory, ending the game with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.57 from their 13 shots to United's measly 0.37 from their five attempts.

Macario described her goal under the Wembley arch as "the cherry on the cake" to a perfect season.

"It's a trophy we always wanted to win. We wanted to win a treble. It's been a hard season for me personally, so it's a special day to be at Wembley," Macario said.

"It's a very emotional day. I think it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to play at Wembley and to score in a final, in such an important game, it brings a lot of emotion.

"It was the cherry on the cake for the end of the season. Playing for Chelsea, we want to win everything.

"It is a lot of pressure any time that you play in a massive game like this but we have this winning mentality.

"We've been here before and we know what we have to do to win. That's what we did today."
