Marc Cucurella kept Chelsea's hopes of earning Champions League qualification alive as his goal earned a huge 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Cucurella popped up with a 71st-minute header to move Enzo Maresca's team up to fourth in the Premier League table, on what looked to be a frustrating night for the hosts.

Following Aston Villa's victory over Tottenham Hotspur earlier on Friday, Chelsea knew the importance of a win to ensure a top five finish was still in their hands on the final day. 

Harry Maguire thought he had steered United into a 16th-minute lead when he planted Bruno Fernandes' cross home, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. 

Chelsea responded promptly to that disallowed goal, with Reece James' stunning volley from the edge of the box clipping the left-hand post from just outside the area. 

The Blues then believed they had the chance to take the lead just after the hour when Tyrique George tumbled under the challenge of Andre Onana inside the box. 

Chris Kavanagh awarded a penalty but was sent to the monitor for an on-field review and changed his decision, but Chelsea did get themselves in front soon after. 

James' neat turn and cross was met powerfully by the head of Cucurella for his fifth Premier League goal of the season, though the result should have been out of sight. 

Noni Madueke squandered a glorious chance moments later, collecting Cole Palmer's pass but skewed his strike wide of the mark, but Chelsea were able to hold on for the win. 

The result moves Chelsea up to 66 points, level with Aston Villa, after their win over Spurs, and Newcastle United. The Red Devils, meanwhile, stay 16th.

Data Debrief: Home comforts for Chelsea and Cucurella

Should Chelsea secure Champions League football this season, their form at Stamford Bridge since the turn of the year will be the reason for a top-five finish. 

The Blues remain unbeaten in the Premier League at home in 2025, winning eight and drawing two of 10 games. They've won more points on home soil (26) than any other side this calendar year.

And their latest win came courtesy of Cucurella's fine header. Indeed, all six of the Spaniard's top-flight goals have come at home (one for Brighton, five for Chelsea). In Premier League history, only Clive Wilson (9), Jeff Kenna (8) and Ronny Johnsen (8) have scored more goals with 100% of them coming at home.

But for United, their league woes continued. Their defeat against Chelsea was their 18th in the league, their most in a campaign since losing 20 in 1973-74 in the last season in which they were relegated.
