Brendan Gan returns to Malaysia national squad for first time since beating cancer

Brendan Gan is among 25 players called up by Malaysia head coach Kim Pan-gon for the national team's international matches in September.

The Selangor captain last played for the Harimau Malaya in a 1-0 win over Thailand in June 2021 before he announced he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

A year after the diagnosis, he made his first football appearance in a Malaysian Super League match against Sarawak United, in which he scored the opening goal en route to a 7-0 thrashing.

Gan is joined by fellow Red Giants team-mates Sharul Nazeem Zulpakar and Mukhairi Ajmal Mahadi in the national team dominated by newly crowned Malaysian FA Cup winners Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) with nine representatives.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) also revealed Dion Cool's club future after FC Midtjylland released him early from his contract by mutual agreement.

The half-Belgian full-back was detailed as playing for FK Jablonec in the Czech First League, but there is no official announcement from the club at the time of writing.

Malaysia would be taking part in the King's Cup in Thailand at the end of the month.

They face the home country on September 22 before taking on either Trinidad & Tobago or Tajikistan three days later.
