Malaysia, whose only AFF Championship success came in 2010, were knocked out in the group stage in the previous edition under then-head coach Tan Cheong Hoe.

Since then, Kim Pan-gon was appointed as the new head coach and led the national team to qualify for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

The 2022 edition of the AFF Championship is schedule to kick off on December 20, just days after the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar concludes, providing continuous football action for Southeast Asian football fans.

The tournament concludes with a two-legged final in January next year.
