A-League Review: Wanderers wobble continues as Jets, Roar earn victories

Western Sydney Wanderers slumped to a 2-0 loss at Newcastle Jets as their poor run of A-League results continued on Saturday.

Substitute Angus Thurgate scored the first and set up the second for Dimitri Petratos to condemn Markus Babbel's men to a third successive defeat.

Outplayed in the first half, Western Sydney improved after the interval and would have taken the lead had Glen Moss not denied Mitchell Duke and Nicolai Muller with a smart double save.

Newcastle defended stoutly and got their reward when Matthew Millar's cross fell for Thurgate to sweep home his second goal in as many games in the 78th minute.

The 19-year-old then beat the offside trap to set up Petratos for the 86th-minute sealer, the goal wrapping up the home side's second consecutive victory.

The Jets are seventh in the standings, two points behind Western Sydney.

Brisbane Roar earlier bounced back to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners at Suncorp Stadium.

In a largely tepid affair, it took until just after the hour for Roy O'Donovan to make the breakthrough against his former employers.

The Irish striker turned in Dylan Wenzel-Halls' driven low cross and Brisbane put three points beyond doubt five minutes later, Scott Neville heading in Jay O'Shea's corner.

The hosts, 2-1 losers at Wellington Phoenix last time out, are up to sixth, while Central Coast are a point behind in ninth.
