Yew Sin-Ee Yi become latest victims of cyberbullying

Ong Yew Sin has become the latest Malaysian shuttler to be targeted by online trolls after he and Teo Ee Yi crashed out in the opening round of the Indonesia Masters on Tuesday.

The men’s doubles shuttler posted a screenshot of the online threat, which threatened to slash Teo’s hand following the pair’s 18-21, 15-21 defeat against Chinese Taipei’s Lee Jhe-huei-Yang Po-hsuan.

“You guys should just retire. I mean what I say, I will do everything I can to force you to retire. If you fall out of form again and lose to an opponent you shouldn’t have, my presence at your match someday will be felt.

“I will carry a knife and slash Ee Yi’s hand, forcing you to either change partners or retire,” read the message from an Instagram account called jaychen73.

The online attacks against Ong is the latest incident in a spate of threats directed at the shuttlers.

In October last year, the Badminton Association of Malaysia said they would monitor the cyberbullying against the national shuttlers, who were subject to online hate on the back of their performances in Europe.

The shuttlers affected by the online threats last year included Malaysian pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing and Goh V Shem, who currently partners South Korea’s Choi Sol-gyu.

The cyberbullying against Ong and Teo most likely stemmed from punters who lost money having placed bets on the pair’s matches.
